Course Content

  • Develop a critical understanding of organisations, the markets they serve and the process of adding value.
  • The internal workings and management of the organisations (marketing, finance, human resources management and production).
  • The process of decision making in a dynamic external environment.
  • How business behaviour can be influenced by a range of people and organisations including customers, managers, creditors, owners/shareholders and employees.
  • The factors outside the organisation which influence the operation of the business, such as the state of the economy, the environment, ethical considerations, the government, the law, social and technological issues associated with business activity.
  • Techniques to analyse and solve business problems.
  • The importance in a business of setting objectives.

Methods of Assessment

In Year 12 candidates take the following units:
Paper 1 – Business 1
Paper 2 – Business 2
- What is business?
- Managers, leadership and decision making
- Decision making to improve marketing performance
- Decision making to improve operations management performance
- Decision making to improve human resources management performance
Written exam: 1 hour 30 minutes
80 marks in total
50% of AS
Written exam: 1 hour 30 minutes
80 marks in total
50% of AS
In Year 13 the A-level course consists of one exam:
Paper 3 – Business 3 worth 50% of the total A ‘level course.

Other Information

  • Students have the opportunity to visit actual businesses both in the UK and abroad to put theory into context.
  • Guest speakers from industry are invited to speak to students on alternative weeks.

Entry Requirements

GCSE B Business Studies or BTEC Merit or (if Business was not studied) GCSE B maths.
