Three members of Broxbourne’s U19 netball team were competing in the opening weekend of the National Performance League (NPL) fixtures. U19 captain Ellie Newman also captains the netball superleague franchise Hertfordshire Mavericks, while Vice-captain Emily Gulvin is an integral player for Surrey Storm. Both girls are currently involved in the England U19 development squad and have played for the superleague teams for a number of years now. New on the scene is year 12 pupil Aimee Hatley who was making her debut in the NPL fixtures for Hertfordshire Mavericks after recent progress.
The NPL consists of teams of players, who are selected to represent the Youth squads of the 8 NSL franchises. The players are in the athlete pathway for progression to possibly become future NSL players. Over a season, each team play each other once and in a league structure, with an NPL Champion crowned at the end of the season.
All three girls were key players in the success of each team. Often part of the starting seven, all three girls describe the weekend great fun and an opportunity to play netball of an extremely high standard. Ellie, Emily and Aimee will be joined by Herts Mavericks defender Beth Hatherly in preparing for the regional round of the national schools championships in January.
